Types of alcohol
In this section
of the website there is a brief overview of each type of alcohol.
Each type of alcohol has its own strength and effect on people.
Beer
Beer is the most widely consumed type of alcohol and is probably the oldest.
It is the 3rd most popular drink behind water and tea. It is made by fermenting
sugars and wheat. The general strength of beer is between 4% and 6%. In rare
cases it goes above 15% and down to 1%. Since beer is the most drunk alcoholic
beverage it is the most commonly used also to binge drink. Although sometimes
used to binge drink, beer is also used to relax for most people without getting
drunk easily.
Wine
Wine is an alcoholic drink made from fermented fruit juice. The fruit usually
used is grapes. Wine also has a rich history. The earliest wine known to be
made dates to over 8000 years ago. Not only does wine taste nice but is commonly
apart of many Mediterranean style meals. Usually wine contains around 10% to
14% alcohol.
Spirits
Spirits are generally distilled alcoholic beverages. The spirits alcohol percentage
is usually much higher than most other alcoholic beverages. The alcohol percentage
ranges from 20% and above. In America spirits are also known as hard liquor
to differentiate from the not so strong beverages. The earliest signs of spirits
were in the first century AD.
Champagne
Champagne is carbonated version of wine and is only made in the Champagne region
of France which of course is where it gets it name from. The Romans were the
first people to plant vineyards in the area of Champagne in the 5th century.
The main difference between Champagne and Wine is that when Champagne is poured
into the glass it creates bubbles. The alcoholic percentage of Champagne ranges
from 9% to 14% much like wine.
